MicroLite Solution – Monitoring Potato Storage at Strauss Frito-Lay

Customer’s Last Word:

“The MicroLite solution enables us to realize great value for money – with this low-cost, user-friendly solution to back-up our climate control system, we can continuously monitor and record the temperature and relative humidity conditions of our stored potatoes.”

Noam Peleg, Agronomist, Strauss Frito-Lay

The application in Strauss Frito-Lay was supplied by TMI Barak Ltd, distributor of Fourtec for the past 8 years.

When storing fresh market produce, maintaining the suitable temperature and relative humidity are two critical environmental factors required for proper storage. Unsuitable environmental conditions of stored potatoes can result in weight loss, shrinkage or decay. Actively managing the temperature and relative humidity within storage allows maximizing the quality and quantity of potatoes that can be used following the storage stage.

Application: Temperature and humidity monitoring in potato storage

Organization: Strauss Frito-Lay

Background:

When storing fresh market produce, maintaining the suitable temperature and relative humidity are two critical environmental factors required for proper storage. Unsuitable environmental conditions of stored potatoes can result in weight loss, shrinkage or decay. Actively managing the temperature and relative humidity within storage allows maximizing the quality and quantity of potatoes that can be used following the storage stage.

About the Customer:

Strauss Frito-Lay is a joint venture between Strauss Group and the American food corporation PepsiCo. Strauss Frito-Lay established a snack factory in 1990, manufacturing a wide variety of salty snacks. Strauss Frito-Lay operates within the highest standards, procedures and technology of the global PepsiCo Corporation.

Key Customer Challenges:

  • Maintaining proper environment conditions during potato storage is fundamental not only to successful storage but also in eliminating excessive shrinkage and decay of the potato. Suitable temperature and relative humidity in the storage facility are the critical factors in achieving this goal.
  • The environmental conditions should be maintained at temperatures of approximately 8.5-9.5 °C (47.3-49.1°F) and between 92% to 97% relative humidity.
  • In order to ensure that the quality of the stored potatoes is maintained until processing, Strauss Frito-Lay has installed a computerized system for controlling temperature and relative humidity in the storage facility.
  • This system displays the current conditions but doesn’t have the capability for continuous logging and recording of the data.
  • Therefore, Strauss Frito-Lay was interested in a data logging solution to back-up their computerized system, providing 24/7 monitoring of the temperature and relative humidity for manual validation of the data displayed by the online system, as well as for generating reports for special analysis, following condition alteration in the storage facility.

MicroLite Implementation:

The MicroLite II Temp/RH device is placed inside the potato container located at the storage facility, providing continuous monitoring and recording of temperature and relative humidity.

The device is used to manually verify that the data currently displayed by the climate control system is reliable. Using the DataSuite software, it is also used to generate visual reports of the logged data during a period of two weeks, in order to learn the effects of altered conditions on the stored potatoes.

PDF data reports are produced using the complimentary DataSuite software, which indicate any deviations from the defined measurement range.

Measurable Results:

  • Cost effective solution - Perfectly suited to the customer application, providing maximum results with minimal resources.
  • Compact & Easy to use - The MicroLite solution is compact and user-friendly, requring no additional resources for operating the device.
  • High ROI - The intuitive and quick implementation of the MicroLite logger and the analysis provided by the free DataSuite Software enable Strauss Frito-Lay to  continuosly learn and improve their storage conditions.
  • Meeting standards and regulations - Using the data Export to Excel ™ feature proves data integrity and the intuitive visual reports generated by DataSuite provides transparent data records meeting the standards and regulations of the PepsiCo Corporation.
