Increasing production to meet gold demand is a slow and capital-intensive process limited by geopolitics, health and safety regulations and environmental restrictions.In response to increased regulatory demands, particularly in the wake of numerous global mining accidents, this  South African gold mine required a low cost, portable solution that could monitor temperature and humidity conditions in the mine.

About the customer:

In response to increased regulatory demands, particularly in the wake of numerous global mining accidents, the company required a low cost, portable solution that could monitor temperature and humidity conditions in the mine.

 

Key Customer Challenges:

  • Mine workers are exposed to numerous hazards underground such as gas, dust, methane, propane and hydrogen exacerbated by high temperature and humidity levels. The mine must constantly monitor health and safety conditions to ensure miners are not subject to excessive environmental stress.
  • The teams of workers are constantly on the move throughout the mine system, sometimes remaining for long periods in hard to access areas.
  • The mine is a mission critical environment with shift-work continuing around the clock. Data must be quickly downloaded and easily identifiable with shift schedules.

 

MicroLog Implementation:

The MicroLog was first certified Explosion Protected Ex ia I/IIC T4 - identified by Inspection Authority Number: MS-XPL/04220 X in South Africa. Units escort work teams during their shift throughout the mine. Data is taken every 15 minutes, with minimum/maximum temperature and humidity measures regularly checked on the LCD by the miners themselves. On return to the surface the data is automatically downloaded to the administrator’s computer where the miners’ working conditions are assessed.

 

 

Measurable Results:

  • Intrinsically Safe Certificate  - approved for use in explosive environments, allowing the mine to receive accurate readings on safety in both surface and underground mine conditions.
  • Portable, long term monitoring – the MicroLog offers easy portability, weighing 55g and only 72mm in diameter, as well as being water and dustproof to IP65
  • Shift-based measures - the MicroLog has been programmed with an identifier, indicating the health and safety conditions for each group of workers.
